Namibia (WKRG) – About 8,000 miles from Port, you will find Dr. Lori Marker and the Cheetah Preservation Fund in Namibia – a country in Africa.
Dr. Marker has spent more than 50 years studying the leopard and trying to help prevent endangered cats.

“To save the leopard, we do a variety of different programs, which include research, education and memorization,” said Dr. Marker.
Dr. Marker CCF has established about 35 years ago in Namibia – the capital of the world’s cheetah – to help save animals for future generations.
“There are only about 7,000 leopards in the world today, so it is the most big cat in Africa,” Dr. Marker continued.
One of the issues that affect the inhabitants of the leopard is the illegal pets trade, which comes primarily in the Horn of Africa.
“Although I am residing here in Namibia, we have a second base, and it is in Somalia, a separatist country of Somalia,” said Dr. Marker. “There, cats come from Ethiopia and Somaliland, and they are listed as chests and selling them in the illegal pet trade.”
Dr. Markr continued to say that they had more than 100 exemplies who saved them from trade at the Research Center in Somalia.
Dr. Marker said: “We often get the cubs, often, and if you get a cub, a small cub that should be on a bottle, then he may not be able to return to the wilder because it gets used to and works for people.”
Later this month, Dr. Marker will come to Mobile at the Educational Travel Conference to discuss the importance of leopards and other animals in Africa living in the wilderness.
On March 20, you will spend time in the Gulf Coast Zoo on the shores of the Gulf, where two of the leopards made them their house in July 2024.
